A secondary school in Bloxham is the proud owner of a new brazing hearth, thanks to a charitable donation.
The Warriner School’s design and technology department approached Banbury Charities after its old machine was deemed not fit for purpose.
The school was given a grant of more than £7,000 to purchase a new machine.
Simon James, head of DT at the school said: “Our old machine had been condemned and was not in good shape as it had been at the school for about 40 years.
“I had heard of Banbury Charities and the work they do, but never really looked into the idea of asking for funding. So I wrote a letter to them, didn’t expect a reply and was amazed when I got one!”
The new hearth was installed at the school about a month ago and will allow students to forge different metals with a blowtorch.
They will also have the opportunity to solder different types of metal, including copper and brass . The machine will be used by students on a new A-level engineering course starting at the Warriner in September.
Mr James said: “In the future students will be able to forge small types of jewellery. This comes at a great time ahead of the new engineering course at the school.
“We are so appreciative of the donation, and it will have a lasting effect on current and future students.”
Kevin Bray, engineering teacher at the school, added: “This will allow the students once again to experience the challenge of working with hot metals and forging them into designs.
“Students from Year Seven will be able to use the equipment for years to come and Banbury Charities’ support has really helped us.”
