School leaps out of special measures

Staff and pupils at Middle Barton Primary School are celebrating after the school came out of special measures and was graded ‘good’ in a recent Ofsted inspection.

The school was placed in special measures in 2011 but, after three rigorous monitoring visits, jumped two grades from inadequate to good after the inspection on February 6.

Darren Silvester, chair of governors at the school, said: “The governing body are delighted, privileged and extremely proud to announce the result of the recent Ofsted inspection.

“This is the result of the focus, hard work, dedication and team work across the school.”

He added: “The governing body would like to pass on a massive thank you to the executive headteacher, associate headteacher, teaching staff, teaching assistants, admin staff and support staff.

“Everyone is very proud of the achievement and we look forward to working together to continue to build on this success. The school was graded ‘good’ in all four key areas, namely achievement of pupils, quality of teaching, behaviour and safety of pupils and leadership and management.

The report states: “Achievement is good, pupils’ progress has improved at a rapid pace since the last inspection. It is now good in all year groups and at times is outstanding.” Other strengths included “rigorous” classroom checks, additional support for pupils who find learning difficult, and the “hard work” of the senior management team in driving improvement.

A number of reasons were given why the school has not yet achieved outstanding status, including the majority of pupils lacking confidence when reading aloud in class, and the subject leaders lacking the depth of experience to take strategic leads.

The school was assisted in making improvements by senior staff at Bishop Loveday School in Bodicote which was graded ‘good’ after an inspection in September 2011. To view the full report go to www.ofsted.co.uk
