Rolling back the menu and prices to celebrate 40 years

A FAMILY will celebrate 40 years of running a village pub by rolling back the menu and prices to the way they were when they took over the business in 1973.
Forty years ago Lino Pires and his late wife Augusta bought The Butchers Arms pub in Priors Hardwick.
Since then the couple’s son Peter and daughter-in-law Helen have joined in the running of the pub.
The family will mark their special 40th anniversary this year by recreating a menu and prices typical of the time when they took over.
Peter Pires said: “We really want to do something special to mark this incredible anniversary.
“We thought by offering a rollback menu with rollback prices to match it would be great fun, offering something a little different to our customers.”
The 1973 evening will take place on January 22. Among the items on the original starter menu were grapefruit cocktails costing just 20p and prawn cocktails for 30p.
Items on the main menu included fried scampi costing 90p, grilled halibut for 90p and gammon, egg and pineapple for 85p. The most expensive main course consisted of a T-bone steak, set at a price of £1.40.
Desserts ranged from ice cream costing 15p, to a homemade sherry trifle for 20p or a luxurious 30p chocolate gateau. The pub’s most expensive bottle of champagne cost less than £5 while a typical bottle of white or red wine ranged in price from £1.20 to £4.60.
Lino Pires said the secret of his 40-year success behind the bar was good food coupled with good customer service. He said: “We offer a warm welcome to customers old and new alike, great service with a wide selection of fantastic food. We must be doing something right as many of our customers have been supporting us since we opened our doors in 1973!”
In addition to serving customers, the pub has also spent the past four decades serving its community by raising funds for a variety of local and national charities.
These include The Royal Marsden Hospital, local schools and Prostate Cancer Awareness.
