Pupils hit the high notes for charity Christmas song

TWO Banburyshire pupils were selected to sing on a Christmas single that will raise funds for charity.

Libby Griffiths, ten, from Sibford School and Will Homewood, 12, of The Warriner School in Bloxham were selected from hundreds of children to sing ‘Dare Make a Wish’, which was recorded yesterday (Wednesday) at St Mary’s Church, Banbury.

The pair were selected from an audition in Banbury and proceeds from the sale of the single will go to Dyslexic Action.

Libby, who is also dyslexic, said: “I’ve always loved singing and dancing and I was really nervous when I did the audition. I went to a friend’s birthday party afterwards so I forgot about it pretty quickly! But when I found out I was selected I was really happy and excited about singing.”

The song, from a new musical called The Land of Sometimes, will be released on December 9.

Libby and Will sing the parts of Elise and Alfie, twins who go on a journey to a far away land and along the way meet eccentric characters who have their own songs. They are backed by a choir of about 400 schoolchildren.

Will said: “I do a lot of performances at the school and regularly go to the Rock Choir, which is great. I really enjoy singing and when I did the audition I wanted to know straight away if I was successful.

“I was really happy that I got through and would love to keep doing things like this in the future.”

Auditions took place in Banbury with schoolchildren from across Oxfordshire and further afield taking part. Panel judges included Mo Westworth, the single’s musical director and founder of the Unison Rock Academy. She said: “To have lots of children singing together is fantastic. I have had more children wanting to get involved in singing who did not know about this before.”
