Polling opens in elections

VOTING has opened this morning (Thursday) in a by-election for Cherwell District Council’s Ruscote ward.

The election will fill the vacancy left by Councillor George Parish who stepped down after 20 years’ service last month.

The three candidates standing in the election are David Burton (UKIP), Gordon Ross (Labour) and Pat Tompson (Conservative).

Polls opened at 7am across the district and will close at 10pm this evening.

The election result is expected to be announced at 4pm tomorrow at Spiceball Leisure Centre.

Residents who have registered to vote will have been sent polling cards with details of their nearest polling station.

Voting has also opened this morning across Oxfordshire in elections to appoint a Police and Crime Commissioner for Thames Valley Police. There are six candidates - Anthony Stansfeld (Conservative), Tim Starkey (Labour), John Howson (Lib Dem), Barry Cooper (UKIP) and Patience Tayo Awe and Geoff Howard (independent). Polling opened at 7am and will close this evening at 10pm.

Crime Commissioners are also being elected today for Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Police forces.
