Penhurst School to close this year

A school in Chipping Norton that supports children and young people with severe disabilities it is set to close in May.

The decision to close Penhurst School in New Street was made by the charity Action for Children, who run the school and launched a consultation into a proposal in October 2012.

Barbara Street, operational director of children’s services at Action for Children, said: “We fully understand that many people will be saddened by this decision, but despite our best efforts the school has become unsustainable. Nationally, there has been an increasing move away from this way of providing care, towards placing more children and young people nearer their local community.

“The wellbeing of the children and young people at Penhurst remains our highest priority. We are currently working with local authorities so that these children and young people find high-quality alternative placements that can meet these needs.

“We will also ensure that our staff are fully supported during this difficult time.”
