A NEW yacht club is set to be launched in Chipping Norton, despite being based more than 100 miles from the sea.

Trevor Taylor of neighbouring village Spelsbury has come up with the idea for Chipping Norton Yacht Club to allow those with an interest in sailing to meet up.

Despite being located at one of the most inland points in the country, Mr Taylor said the response had been very good and was “really very encouraging.

“We may be on a hill miles from the sea, lack moorings, have no dinghy park or river frontage but in the Cotswolds there are hundreds of people with a keen interest in boats and sailing,” said Mr Taylor.

“Many Cotswold locals sail on the south, east and west coasts or overseas but, until now, there’s been no local yacht club where those interested in boating can meet without having to embark on a two-hour journey to the Solent or longer to east or west coast ports.”

Mr Taylor is hoping to formally launch the club early in the new year and although a definite location has yet to be fully confirmed, he is confident it will be at a location within Chipping Norton. The group will be open to people of all ages and backgrounds with an interest in boating and sailing. It will meet at least once a month to provide an opportunity for the Cotswold sailing community to get together, share experiences, hear from guest speakers, find crew and enjoy social meetings.

“How often we meet will depend on the response – which has so far been really good – but it will be at least once a month but probably more often,” said Mr Taylor.

The club is in contact with the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) with a view to affiliate membership and as well as social events the club will organise talks on key topics and provide RYA approved training courses and discounts with selected suppliers.
