Name of canal victim is released

OXFORDSHIRE Coroners’ office has today (Friday) released the name of a man who died after being pulled from the Oxford Canal in Banbury on Tuesday.

Raymond Victor Thompson, 79, of Hilton Road in Banbury, died on Tuesday evening despite heroic efforts from a local police officer who leapt into the water to save him.

Mr Thompson’s death is not being treated as suspicious by Thames Valley Police. An inquest into his death was opened by the county’s coroners today (Friday) and adjourned to a date yet to be fixed.
