Megan cooks up a treat to win prize

NINE aspiring chefs have taken part in a competition to encourage young people to develop their cookery skills.

Students from schools across Banburyshire took part in Banbury’s Rotary Young Chef of the Year competition, now in its seventh year, at Banbury’s Oxford and Cherwell Valley College on Broughton Road on Tuesday.

Bernard Goodchild helped organise the event and said: “We are delighted the college is on our side and so keen to promote an event like this. I am always amazed at the young chefs who enter this competition and cook food under time pressures and with the judges walking around them. This is a really worthwhile cause.”

The finalists were each given a chef’s jacket, hat and apron on the day. Megan Coy came out on top to win the event, with Laura Hewitt and Martha Jones taking the joint runner-up prize.

Banbury mayor Tony Ilott and Helen Medeiros of Banbury Charities presented the trophies and certificates.

Mr Ilott said: “I thought it was amazing that these young people could produce food I could only ever dream of cooking and that had the quality of restaurant food.

“This competition is great because it gives them the confidence to do things like this.

“I spoke to one parent whose son entered this competition several years ago and now travels the world cooking.”

Megan will now go on to the regional finals and, if successful, head to the national final at Gloucestershire College in Cheltenham in May.

The winner will be given a Rotary International trophy, £250 and a day at London’s Fifteen restaurant.
