THE level crossing where an 85 year-old man died after the car he was travelling in was hit by a freight train earlier this month, was functioning correctly according to British Transport Police.

Banbury man Tom Pizzey, 85, died after the collision at Sandy Lane, Yarnton on January 2.

BTP spokesperson Simon Letouze confirmed initial investigations suggest the level crossing was working properly and investigations will now focus on to the blue Renault Kangoo which was hit by the Freightliner Train.

Mr Letouze said: “Although the investigation continues into the incident, initial enquiries would suggest the level crossing was functioning correctly.”

He added: “The driver of the vehicle remains in hospital, and clearly his full recovering is of paramount importance. Officers will, however, speak to him in due course.

“In the meantime, a file will be prepared the Coroner’s inquest into the incident due to be held at a date yet to be set at Oxfordshire Coroner’s court.”
