THREATS to funding could threaten the future of Nordic walking courses in Banburyshire.

For the past four years the GO Active team at Cherwell District Council has run Nordic walking courses from Bodicote. A new course is due to begin on Saturday, February 9 but due to uncertain future funding the council is warning this year’s winter course could be the last.

Cllr George Reynolds, Cherwell’s deputy leader, said: “Nordic walking has been a hugely popular activity offering health benefits to hundreds of people across Cherwell. We are pleased to be able to offer this new course for 2013 but people should join while they can.”

Nordic walking burns up to 46 per cent more calories than normal walking and is ideal to build fitness or help with weight loss.

The Cherwell course costs £20 per person, covers four hours of learning and poles are provided. Once people have completed the course they can join free, volunteer-led social walks around the district and county.

The new course will take place at Bodicote Village Hall from 10am to noon on Saturday, February 9 and again on Saturday, February 16.

The GO Active (Get Oxfordshire Active) scheme is a £1.4 million three-year project to get over 16s doing 30 minutes’ exercise three times a week.
