Harlequins give their take on well-loved tale
Think you know the story of Sleeping Beauty? Well, you may know some of it, but certain details were missed out from the Disney Film.
From today (Thursday) to Saturday, Cropredy Harlequins are presenting their unique take on the well-loved tale.
The show has been written specially by member and passionate panto enthusiast James Wilkinson.
Like the traditional version, the story involves an accident with a spinning wheel, followed by an extended lie-in for the princess and royal household. However, the plot takes several detours as a trio of eccentric fairy godmothers travel the world in search of “Mr Right”.
They are hotly pursued by the evil Fairy Cyn and her two “psycho bunnies” who are intent on scuppering any plans to wake the princess.
The stage is set for a colourful whirlwind of scenery and costume changes, accompanied by songs appropriate to each location.
All this is, of course, bound together with the traditional cheeky pantomime humour and audience participation.
Jokes fly thick and fast – some a little saucy but nothing to offend. An eclectic mix of songs are wittily revamped by droll accompaniment from church organist David Upton.
Writer and director James Wilkinson said: “I’ve always loved panto, particularly its very British ‘seaside postcard’ humour. It’s been great to see how well the cast have taken to my slightly quirky script. We have some fantastic actors in our adult cast and they are brilliantly supported by an enthusiastic group of younger members who have all worked hard to bring the show to life”.
Publicity officer Caroline Watsham said: “What’s great about this show is that it has been written specially for us so James has been able to create characters to suit the talents of our cast. It’s also not nearly as long as the average panto, so no fears of late nights for our younger cast and audience members!”
The show starts at 7.30pm each evening, with an additional matinee on the Saturday starting at 2.30pm.
Tickets are all priced at the special concessionary rate of £5 and are on sale at Bridge Stores and Green Pantry in Cropredy, or from the box office on 01295 758224.
