Banbury’s first academy has been graded ‘good’ by government Ofsted inspectors.

North Oxfordshire Academy was inspected on January 31 and in a report dated February 25 the school was graded ‘good’ in all four areas of competence; achievement of pupils, quality of teaching, behaviour and safety of pupils and leadership and management.

The academy was graded ‘satisfactory’ when last inspected in January 2010.

Sara Billins, academy principal, was said to provide ‘commitment, drive and ambition’. She said: “We are all thrilled with this report which is a very fair reflection of everything North Oxfordshire Academy has achieved in recent years.

“I am delighted the inspectors recognised all the work that is well under way to raise standards further.”

“Whilst we are greatly encouraged by this report, we have our sights set on becoming an outstanding school and are now focused on doing whatever it takes to achieve this.”

The report states the number of students gaining five or more GCSEs at grades A*-C including English and mathematics has improved over the past three years and is now in line with the national average. Teaching is ‘good’ and helps students to achieve well, the principal provides ‘effective leadership’, and the senior leadership team are ‘strongly focused’.

Other strengths include the sixth form which provides an appropriate range of courses to meet the needs of its students.

The report states the school is not yet outstanding because marking which is thorough and gives good advice to students is not evident in all classes, because there is a variation in students’ achievement between subjects and some strategies introduced to produce school improvement have not yet had time to show impact.
