Fire at Banbury factory

STAFF were evacuated from Fine Lady Bakeries in Banbury last night (Sunday) after a fire broke out in one of the buildings.

At about 6.45pm firefighters received reports of a fire in an oven extractor hood flue at the factory in Southam Road.

Two appliances from Banbury were initially mobilised and upon arrival found flames issuing from chimney stack of one of the bread production plants.

A full evacuation of the affected building was under way and crews were met by a production manager who quickly briefed the initial fire officer and showed the crews to the scene of operations.

On-site employees had held the fire back using fire extinguishers and were relieved by firefighters using breathing apparatus and hose reel jets.

Due to the size of the building a further four fire engines were requested along with the hydraulic platform.

During the incident fire officers worked very closely with site managers, which, enabled limited bakery staff to re-enter the building to bring key plant back on-line as part of the business continuity plans.

Within one hour, fire crews had managed to get all members of the bakery staff back into production.

Station manager David Bray said: “Thanks to the very close liaison that my crews and I had with the production Managers, we were able to bring the fire under control quickly and assist the Bakery to get their production back into full swing.

“In total it is estimated that the site has lost only a very limited amount of production and I would like to thank both the site managers for all their safety critical knowledge and the employees who initially tackled the fire, which has led to a safe and successful conclusion to this incident, with no persons involved sustaining any injuries.”

The incident was attended by forty firefighters, appliances from Banbury, Hook Norton, Deddington and Bicester and specials from Eynsham, Woodstock and Rewley Road, Oxford.

Fine Lady Bakeries’ operation managers have thanked the fire and rescue service and their own employees for all of their actions during this incident.
