Festive free parking comes to an end
A FREE parking scheme in Banbury put on by Cherwell District Council over the Christmas and New Year period has now ended.
Shoppers coming to the town centre were able to make the most of the initiative on weekends and Mondays from December 1 until Monday, and was aimed at encouraging more people during the festive period.
Councillor George Reynold, Cherwell’s deputy leader, said: “Evidence suggests that the scheme drew a substantial amount of visitors to the towns and benefited both shoppers and traders.
“Putting on the free parking cost the council about £100,000 in lost revenue, This year we were largely able to offset that with Portas Plus funding provided by the Government, but there is no guarantee that similar funding will be available to us to be able to provide a similar scheme again.”
