Family’s plea to council to help them get rehoused

A family of four who are living in one room are pleading with Cherwell District Council to find them suitable housing.

In last week’s Banbury Guardian we told the story of landlady Angela Green who is facing prosecution from the council for overcrowding at her property in Marlborough Place, Banbury.

At the same time however, the council is urging her tenants to stay in the shared property, as it has nowhere else to house them.

Tenant Samantha Hammond, her partner and two children (aged three and eight) are pleading with the council to help them out as they need to move out today (Thursday) or Miss Green will be forced to evict them.

Miss Hammond said: “Neither Miss Green nor us want to go down that route. All we can do now is to wait for the eviction notice and when we get that social services will get involved and we may lose the children.

“Then we have to fill in a homeless application which means the council will have to provide us with emergency housing for 28 days and then we’ll be in exactly the same situation. We just want the council to help us.”

Council press officer Tony Ecclestone said: “The housing officer assigned to the tenants will try to assist them as far as possible to resolve this situation. He has interviewed them on several occasions and confirmed his advice to them in writing. He continues to work with them.”
