Enter now for It’s a Knockout contest

THE new year may have only just got under way but the Rotary Club of Banbury is already turning its attention to events in the summer.

The Rotarians are inviting people to sign up early for the annual It’s a Knockout contest which will be held at the Banbury and District Show in Spiceball Park on August 9.

The competition, which is based on the former hit TV show, will see adults in teams of eight competing against each other to win the day’s trophy.

Alan Wolstencroft, committee chairman at Rotary, said: “I can still recall the original TV programme back in the 1960s. It involved a tremendous variety of weird and wonderful games for competitors to test themselves with and is great entertainment for spectators. More recently, the idea has seen a renaissance with events springing up around the country demonstrating its popularity.” Banbury firm Barry Callebaut is the current holder of the trophy after taking victory at the event last year.

Banbury town councillor Colin Clarke, chairman of the Banbury Show committee, said: “This is a fun competition which requires physical and co-ordination skills – and a certain amount of bravado. For some years It’s a Knockout has been a top attraction at the Banbury and District Show.

“It’s a real crowd-puller. It’s a new experience for younger visitors to the event, and it takes older people back to the days of Eddie Waring in what was a ground-breaking TV programme that had millions of viewers in its day.”

Entry to the competition costs £136 per team/£17 per adult. To sign up or for more information call Banbury Town Council on 01295 250340.
