Drink-drive crash victim appeals to young drivers
A MOTHER-of-three who narrowly escaped death when her car was hit head-on by a drink-driver has sent out a heartfelt appeal to young motorists who might consider getting behind the wheel after going out partying the night before.
Michelle Croxford, 47, of Greatworth was driving along the B4525 near the Middleton crossroads on her way home from a shopping trip at Banbury Tesco on September 23 last year when a BMW driven by a 21-year-old man strayed across the road and smashed into her Ford Galaxy.
The car was left crushed by the impact and Mrs Croxford sustained internal bleeding, severe bruising to her face, chest, neck and back, and is still having problems with mobility and suffering from post traumatic stress disorder as a result of the crash.
Now Mrs Croxford, who runs an executive car firm with her husband, has spelled out a warning to young drivers.
“The police kept telling me it was as close as it gets to a fatality,” she said.
“Teenagers who are my children’s age just don’t always think about the following day.
“They might be out clubbing until four in the morning and they just don’t think about the following day. They need to think twice before getting into a car.”
The 21-year-old driver was handed a 12-month driving ban after being found guilty at Northampton Magistrates’ Court in December of drink driving, but Mrs Croxford is calling for far stiffer sentences for drink drivers.
“What sort of deterrent is this?” she said.
“If drivers are way over the limit they should get a harsher sentence and their punishment should reflect the seriousness of the accident they caused.”
Mrs Croxford also appealed for more to be done to prevent accidents on the notoriously dangerous B4525.
She said: “There are lots of accidents on it and people drive it too fast.
“Everybody knows where the mobile speed camera sits and articulated lorries shouldn’t be allowed to use the road.”
