A councillor has spoken out against proposals which he says could have led to the closure of the recycling centre in Shipston-on-Stour.

Plans to close two of the seven recycling centres in Warwickshire were mooted by the minority Labour group on Warwickshire County Council in an amendment to the Conservative majority’s budget proposals at a council meeting on February 5.

The amendment – although later voted down –proposed closing the centres to save an estimated £300,000, although it did not specify which centres would be shut.

Richard Cheney, Stratford-on-Avon district councillor for Shipston-on-Stour – who is also Labour – said he was “appalled” at the idea that councillors could even consider the closure of the Shipston Recycling Centre in Brailes Road .

“It’s a well-used site where people can take their recycling and other waste they haven’t managed to put out,” he said.

“If this centre was closed the nearest site would be Stratford, which is 12 miles away, and so this would lead to a decline in recycling and an increase in fly tipping.”

June Tandy, leader of the county council Labour group, said it was hoped the amendment would have saved money which could be diverted into protecting “front-line” services.
