Councillor helps curb detour for war veteran
A Second World War veteran with mobility problems has thanked a councillor who stepped in to resolve an issue he was facing with a lack of dropped kerbs in his street.
Robert Bowley of Lenton Road, Banbury, who uses a walker to get around, had to take a detour to find a drop kerb so he could reach the bus stop on Beaconsfield Road.
But just before Christmas, Banbury Town Council leader Cllr Keiron Mallon – himself a former serviceman – witnessed Mr Bowley’s plight whilst touring his Easington ward investigating potential problems with the roads.
He then lodged a bid with Oxfordshire County Council to have several kerbs dropped along the street and the bus stop base extended for the benefit of Mr Bowley and other waiting passengers. Now Mr Bowley’s ten-minute journey to reach the bus stop has been cut to five minutes
Mr Bowley said he was very grateful for Cllr Mallon’s intervention.
He said: “I would like to thank Cllr Kieron Mallon.
“This will be of considerable benefit to so many people and particularly those using the bus stop.”
Cllr Mallon added: “I was by the bus stop when I saw Mr Bowley having to do a long detour to cross the road safely with his walking frame.
“I thought that as one of our Second World War veterans he deserves better.”
Councillor Mallon is implementing a programme of improvements to bus routes for elderly residents in his ward.
