Company hears Scouts’ roof plea

A COMPANY has secured the future of Scouting troops after they issued a desperate plea for help to fix their leaking hut roof.

Earlier this year members of the 6th Banbury Beavers, Cubs and Scouts launched an appeal to raise £15,000 to repair damage caused by vandals climbing on the building and throwing debris onto the roof.

Supporters of the troops began contacting local businesses for help and donations before Hawkins Group of Companies, based in Banbury, offered to undertake the work for free.

Geoff Fraser, chairman of the 6th Banbury executive committee, said: “The roof was in danger of collapsing and we were under threat of closure. We were using mops and buckets and only had about half of the floor area to use because it was soaking wet.

“Thanks to Hawkins the future of the 6th Banbury scouting troops is secure. We needed to get £15,000 for a new roof and that would have meant getting a loan. However Hawkins offered to do it for free, although we did make a £2,500 contribution.”

Mike Hawkins, commercial director of Hawkins Group of Companies said: “When we saw the poor state of the roof and the water it was awful and we felt compelled to help.

“Smiths of Bloxham and MG Scaffolding also assisted us for free and helped us to give something back to the community.”
