Champion pair dance to victory
A HUSBAND and wife team from Banbury have been crowned the 2012 British Professional Sequence Dance champions at an annual dance festival in Blackpool.
Martin and Sarah Bird competed with couples from across the UK to perform in the competition, which was held in Blackpool’s Winter Garden Empress Ballroom.
It was the first time the couple had performed as professional dancers, having retired as amateur performers following their undefeated British Amateur Sequence Dance Champions in 2010.
Having taken the title, the couple, who teach a beginners ballroom dance class in Banbury, recreated their unique and award-winning Banbury Waltz dance for more than 20 of their students at Banbury Town Hall.
Mr Bird, who is head of history at Banbury Academy, said: “Our recreation of the dance was a really great occasion for all of us to celebrate this year’s hard work and for the class to show off their brilliant footwork.
“It was also an added bonus that Sarah and I were able to cap off our year as British Champions and we’re really pleased we had the opportunity to share our victory with everyone else.”
