Brewery reveals pub plans

HOOK Norton Brewery has revealed its intention to rejuvenate a Banbury town centre pub which has remained closed for a month – but has also announced one of its village hostelries is to be sold.

Rumours about the future of the Coach and Horses Pub in Butchers Row, Banbury have been rife
since the pub closed on November 17 with the curtains remained drawn.

But Hook Norton Brewery’s operations manager, Bruce Benyon, said the pub will reopen in February with new tenants.

“The brewery was running it for some time under a management contract, but we were not particularly happy with the policy of the management company so we decided to terminate the contract,” he said.

“We have begun negotiations with tenants and are just in the process of finalising the details.

“The Coach and Horses is one of our better sites and it will reopen as a pub in February,” he added.

A relaunch took place at the pub in May but it only remained open for six months.

Meanwhile, the brewery has said it has placed the White Swan Pub in Wigginton on the market. Mr Benyon confirmed the pub remains open but is to be sold by the brewery.

“The pub is still open and still selling our beer and serving the village, but it is up for sale and we’ve already had some initial interest,” he said.

Asked why the brewery has decided to sell Mr Benyon added: “We have reviewed our estate as we do every year.”

The pub held a grand reopening in October 2010, having been closed for six months before that. New tenants were welcomed and a new food menu was created.

It was reopened again in December 2011.

The pub has been part of the brewery for more than 100 years.
