CHESS enthusiasts from Banbury were given a stern test on Sunday at they came up against Grandmaster Nigel Short MBE in a simultaneous exhibition.

Mr Short visited the Best Western Hotel on Oxford Road and took part in a 25-board match, which he won 24-1.

Carl Portman of Banbury Chess Club organised the event, and said: “The event was a raging success. Everyone went away happy and it exceeded even my tough expectations.

“It is not the first time I have done something like this and it is all about bringing chess to the younger players. We had nine-year-olds playing 90-year-olds and it was a great day – some of the comments that I have received suggest it will be a day they will never forget.”

Mr Short is regarded as the greatest British chess player and was a World Chess Championship finalist in 1993 against Garry Kasparov. He currently ranks among the top 40 players in the world.

Banbury Chess Club meets every Tuesday at 7pm in the Reindeer Inn on Parsons Street; for more information visit www.banburychessclub.co.uk
