Axe attacker jailed

A 27-year-old man was handed a seven year jail sentence at Oxford Crown Court today (Friday) after striking a 44-year-old victim in the face with an axe.

Barrie Potts of Marlborough Road, Banbury, was found guilty of grievous bodily harm by a jury after a two-day trial.

The court heard Potts struck two blows with the wooden handle of a pick axe in August last year, while the victim was sitting on his bed.

Sentencing Potts, Judge Patrick Eccles QC said: “It’s so serious that only a custodial sentence can be passed upon you.

“You inflicted two blows to the victim’s face with a wooden pick axe handle when he was defenceless and had no reason to expect any form of attack, let alone one of this severity.

“The victim still suffers symptoms both physical and psychological as a result of the injuries sustained.”

Potts was jailed for six-and-a-half years for the axe attack and a further six months for breaching a suspended sentence in relation to a sexual assault on a female in July 2011.
