Shipston doctor launches appeal to help child in Africa with rare condition

A doctor in Shipston on Stour has started an appeal to bring a young boy in Ghana with a rare condition to the UK for a life-saving operation.

Dr David Williams, from Shipston Medical Centre, and his wife, Jacquie, who is a doctor in Chipping Campden, want to bring to the UK three-year-old Ethan Suglo, who has exomphalous, a condition where the intestines and other internal organs form outside the abdomen.

A paediatric consultant, Hugh Grant, has agreed to operate on Ethan at the John Radcliffe Hospital, in Oxford, but £25,000 needs to be raised to pay for the air fare, surgery and nursing care.

A child born in the UK with the condition would normally be operated on immediately with the protruding organs pushed back inside the abdomen.

The appeal is being run by the Williams family and charity Willing and Abel.

Ethan came to Dr Willams attention when he visited his daughter, Laura, who was volunteering in a village in Ghana. Ethan’s father, Charles, approached Dr Williams and asked him to look at his son and after Dr Williams worked out what was wrong he said: “I will do what I can to make this better.”

Ethan is expected to spend around three weeks in hospital and will be accompanied by his father. His mother, Bless, and his brother and sister, will remain at home in Akatsi, in the Volta region of Ghana.
