Night-time drug dealers are taking advantage of a broken CCTV camera to illegally trade in one of Banbury’s most popular parks, it has emerged.
The Banbury Neighbourhood Policing team has issued an appeal saying they have reason to believe drug transactions are taking place in the People’s Park car park off Bath Road at night, with dealers selling from car windows.
A resident who did not wish to be named said: “A lot of residents walk their dogs down there so they see what’s happening. A car will be parked in there and another car will pull up alongside it and there will be youngsters leaning across passing packages between the windows.”
She continued: “I’ve spoken to PCSOs and they have said the CCTV camera has gone away to be fixed. There are a lot of young families in the street and a lot of children play in the park. The dealers are not causing a nuisance but they are having an impact on society in general and what they are doing is illegal.”
Neighbourhood police officers are keen to build up a picture of the activity and have pledged to get more officers on patrols at night.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Banbury Neighbourhood team on 101. Alternatively you can call Crimestoppers without being identified on 0800 555 111.
