Refurbishment is planned for popular town play area

A PLAY area is set for an £80,000 refurbishment, with the public set to help decide on its best new design.

The play equipment in St Louis Meadow Park, Cherwell Heights, will be replaced before the
winter sets in as Banbury Town Council’s programme of updating such areas throughout the town continues.

The council is currently whittling down the 11 designs it has received down to a shortlist of five.

Public opinion on the designs will be a key factor in choosing the winning design.

Cllr Colin Clarke, chairman of the council’s general services committee, said: “I can just about see the play area from where I live and I have to say it has become a bit sorry looking.

“St Louis Meadow is a very pleasant, very natural park and is extremely popular with families and children.

“We have already refurbished two play areas in the town and St Louis Meadow was one we wanted to do as well.

“The five best plans are going on show in the town hall and we really want the public, particularly the people from Cherwell Heights, to come and have a look at them and give us their feedback.

“It would be lovely, especially, if a few of the children who use the park came to have a look to see what they think as it will be them that is benefiting from it.”

Similar children’s play spaces in Princess Diana Park and People’s Park have also been completely revamped in the past 18 months.

Mr Clarke added: “We had 11 responses to our tender and we are in the process of cutting that down to five.

“I’m hopeful that it can be approved and built, everything finished, before the winter.

“St Louis Meadow is fairly easily accessible for contractors so it shouldn’t be too tricky to get it all done fairly quickly.

“We’ve got about £80,000 in total to spend on the St Louis Meadow Park play area.

“It is a beautiful park and will benefit greatly from this exciting new project.”

The designs will be on display at Banbury Town Hall from Monday for four days, with members of the public free to view them and voice their opinions.
