A MAJOR planning proposal to build up to 950 new homes in Southam Road went on display to the public at an exhibition in Banbury Town Hall.
Last Thursday and Saturday dozens of people turned out to view plans for the development, which would be built across two greenfield sites straddling either side of Southam Road leading to Banbury Crematorium and Hanwell village.
Members of the public were also able to put questions to representatives of Bedworth Trading Ltd, the company behind the proposal, and Rapleys, the firm acting as Bedworth’s agent.
Robert Clarke, partner at Rapleys, said: “What we are seeking to realise is Cherwell District Council’s emerging policy aspirations in a manner that responds sensitively to the sites’ restraints while maximising the opportunities to benefit this part of town.
“Because of the sites’ location it is sustainable development which will assist in addressing the council’s significant shortfall in housing supply.”
In March this year, Cherwell District Council received a request for an initial ‘screening opinion’ on the site to determine whether it should be subject to an environmental impact assessment.
The proposed development will be split across a west and east site.
The west site would cover an area of about 17.5 hectares, equivalent to about 16 football pitches, with boundaries formed by Southam Road, Dukes Meadow Drive, Banbury Crematorium and countryside.
About 400 of the development’s homes would be built on this site, along with a care home.
The land to the east of the Southam Road is the larger of the two sites, covering an area of 25.4 hectares (about 23 football pitches) and bordered by Southam Road, the M40 and existing employment sites. It is here the remaining 550 homes would be built.
Following last week’s exhibition, a formal planning application is expected to be submitted to the council over the summer. If this takes place, a target decision date will be decided on by the end of the year.
If the plans are approved, work could start at the site in 2014.
