Plans to build a 60-bed nursing home in Adderbury have been met by opposition from parish councillors.

An application was submitted to Cherwell District Council in November last year to build a nursing home on land west of Banbury Road and north of Greenhill.

A presentation was made to councillors by a representative of Dominic Lawson Bespoke Planning Ltd – agent for the applicant – at a parish council meeting on January 14. Councillors were shown plans for the state-of-the-art building, which applicant Gracewell Healthcare says would form links with and be part of the community.

Benefits would include improvement of the village’s bus service, the library and a new public right of way. It is believed about 75 jobs would be created.

The nursing home would also feature a hair and beauty spa, nail bar, a cafe which would be open to the public and a library.

Following the presentation, parish councillors agreed there was a need for a such a facility in the village, but said they felt the proposed size of the development was a concern. They made it clear the council would not support any planning applications for development in the village until Adderbury’s Neighbourhood Plan has been produced.

A public consultation event on the plans held by Gracewell in October was attended by about 50 residents. Gracewell said the response from the local community was generally positive although concerns about traffic had been raised.

Tim Street, director of Gracewell Healthcare, said: “The proposed care home is designed in a traditional vernacular style with materials reflecting those found in the Twyford part of Adderbury.

“The building is in scale with the adjoining Greenhills development, a part conversion and part new-build scheme of the previous Leonard Cheshire Disability home.

“It will provide a gateway to the village, clearly demarcating the built environment from the countryside beyond.

“Gracewell Healthcare is keen to continue working with the community in Adderbury and welcomes feedback.”
