Autumn has officially arrived and is more visible than ever at Quarry Nurseries near Hornton, which boasts a fantastic selection of pumpkins all ready for Halloween.
The nursery is run by Philip Gilbert and offers a tranquil retreat for keen gardeners with a range of plants and flowers for all seasons on sale six days a week.
Mr Gilbert said: “The growing is what I really enjoy, from preparing it at the start to seeing the finished product. My parents gave me a small area in my garden to work on when I was younger and I’ve have gone on from there.
“There has been a real increase in people growing vegetables in their own garden and it’s a shame there aren’t other nurseries around.”
The 12.5-acre site has been developed by Mr Gilbert for the past 12 years and has seen him plant a selection of evergreen trees and hanging baskets to brighten up the site.
His autumn produce includes edible squashes and he also has a cut flower field where visitors can pick their own bouquets.
He said: “I have tried many things and some have worked and others haven’t. The flowers are really good and there has been a really good reaction from people. It is trying to get the word out there as I understand I am a bit out of the way.
“There is always stuff for me to do up here and sometimes it is hard work, but I really enjoy being outdoors.
“I’ve got a really good area to work with.”
