Many schools across Banburyshire will close tomorrow (Wednesday) due to industrial action by members of the National Union of Teachers (NUT).

A statement on the union’s website says the action is being taken against “excessive workload and bureaucracy,, performance related pay and in defence of a national pay scale system and unfair pension changes.”

Oxfordshire County Council’s Director for Children, Education and Families Jim Leivers said the number of school closures is difficult to predict as schools may not be certain on numbers of staff striking until the last minute.

But he assured parents schools will contact them directly to keep them informed.

He said: “We’re encouraging schools to give the most timely information possible, directly to pupils and parents, to our local media outlets and to the county council for the purposes of keeping our website up to date.

“We do completely understand that schools themselves may be dealing with a very fluid picture right up until the last minute but we hope that teachers will appreciate that there is an impact on the lives of people beyond the confines of the school and provide as much good, solid information about impacts as they can, in advance.”
