Lights, camera and action plan for former RAF base

RAF Upper Heyford

Hollywood could be a regular visitor to the former RAF airbase at Upper Heyford after the site owners applied to use the flying field for film and television production.

The base has been used for filming by several production companies in the past but the Dorchester Group’s planning application submitted to Cherwell District Council seeks to make hosting productions on site more accessible.

Parts of the 2013 Hollywood blockbuster World War Z, which starred Brad Pitt, was filmed at the RAF base and, most recently, Muppets Most Wanted.

It is hoped increased television and film production at the site could provide more opportunities to boost the local economy. To date, filming has had to take place under a General Permitted Development Order (GPDO) which only allows for temporary use of land for 28 days.

In an application letter, senior planner Kerry Pfleger of agent Pegasus Planning Group – acting on behalf of Dorchester – said: “The flying field has to date been used for occasional television and film production alongside and without conflict with the commercial occupiers of the flying field. The application simply seeks to allow this occasional use to take place for more than 28 days in any calendar year.”
