Legendary folk musician Dave Swarbrick dies aged 75

Dave Swarbrick, one of the pioneers of the electric folk movement has died his family have announced.

Former Fairport Convention fidlde player and one of the seminal musicians in folk has died at 75.

Described by many as one of the most influential fiddle players of all time Mr Swarbrick began his illustrious career as a session musician in the 1960s.

In 1969 he joined Cropredy favourites Fairport Convention and was a leading force in the production of their seminal album Liege and Lief.

He remained with the band until 1979 when he went on to form a number of collaborations including the critically acclaimed band Whippersnapper.

In recent years he had suffered with health problems but had remained an active member of the folk music scene touring as a solo performer.

Dave is survived by his wife, the artist Jill Banks, along with three children, Emily, Alexander and Isobel, eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
