A pub in Bloxham has been voted this year’s best cider pub in north Oxfordshire.

The Elephant & Castle on Humber Street – run by Simon Finch’s family for more than 40 years – was told of the news by Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) last week.

Mr Finch, who took over the pub duties from his late father Chas in 2008, said: “I really enjoy my cider and there are lots of pubs in the area that do not sell it, so I took it on myself to get more types of cider in the pub.

My family have been based at the pub for a really long time, so to be recognised like this puts a really big smile on my face. I’m sure my dad would be puffing out his chest in pride!”

In making their decision, members of CAMRA visited the pub over several months as mystery customers and sampled a selection of the ciders on offer. They said: “It was a unanimous decision. Their range is one of if not the best in the region. The choice and quality left the judges with an easy decision.”

The pub has a selection of 15 ciders from across the country, including Dorset, Hereford and Somerset.

Mr Finch will be presented with the plaque commemorating the achievement by officials from CAMRA later this month.

He added: “This is great news for the pub and hopefully it can bring a few new people through the doors and into the village as well.”
