The former test driver for Banbury’s Marussia F1 team, Maria de Villota, was found dead in her hotel room in Seville this morning (Friday).
The Marussia F1 has released the following statement regarding her death:
“It is with great sadness that we learned a short time ago of the news that Maria de Villota has passed away.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Maria’s family and friends at this very difficult time.”
De Villota was appointed Marussia’s reserve and test driver in 2012, but was involved in an accident during straight-line testing at the Duxford Aerodrome last July in which she lost the use of her right eye.
A statement released by de Villota’s family on Maria’s Facebook page read:
“Dear friends: Maria is gone. She had to go to heaven with all the angels. Give thanks to God for the year and a half more that we had left together. Signed. Family Villota.”
