A historic battlefield threatened by the controversial High Speed rail link (HS2) has been registered by English Heritage today (Tuesday).
The site marked the Battle of Edgcote in 1469 and had been considered for registration in 1993 but was rejected because of a lack of information. Following new detailed research, the Battlefields Trust applied to have the site reconsidered in 2010.
Frank Baldwin, chairman of the trust, said: “Following the trust’s success earlier this year in getting the Civil War battlefields at Lostwithiel registered, we are delighted English Heritage has also decided to recognise Edgcote in the same way. The trust’s application was made because of the threat posed to the battlefield from HS2 and we hope now its importance will be properly considered in any planning decisions.”
