The Taylor Wimpey Bourne Lane development for 70 homes in Hook Norton which was approved at appeal in December will have to overcome significant problems with drainage, sewage provision and oil supply for heating systems if it is to proceed.

Documents sent to the developers by The Environment Agency and Thames Water reveal the extent of the problems that need to be overcome. Jack Moeran, planning advisor for The Environment Agency, wrote to Cherwell District Council on May 30 stating it objects to the planning application as submitted because the proposed development would ‘pose an unacceptable risk of pollution of groundwater’.

He said the risk would come from the 70 oil tanks which the developers planned to build underground to supply the sustainable heating systems in the new properties. He said potential leaks from these tanks could pose a risk to the water supplies used by Hook Norton Brewery. A letter from Thames Water dated April 2 demands the developers commit to significant improvements in the sewage systems to prevent ‘sewage flooding.’ A spokesperson for Taylor Wimpey said the firm will take all ‘necessary and appropriate steps’ to resolve the issues by working closely with Thames Water and The Environment Agency.
