Robert and Margaret Stewart from Middle Barton, are celebrating their Diamond wedding anniversary

A couple from Middle Barton who have lived in the village most of their lives celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary today (Thursday).

Margaret Stewart, nee Cox, married Robert Stewart at Heythrop Parish Church on August 28, 1954 in a double ceremony with her sister Doreen and Mr Stewart’s friend Roy.

The couple will enjoy a low-key affair to celebrate the anniversary with their four children Lynne, Trevor, Stephen and James.

The newlyweds moved into a small cottage on South Street, Middle Barton in 1957 before – as the family expanded – also buying a vacant property next door to make two cottages into one family home.

Daughter Lynne Benfield said: “Family has always played a huge part in our lives. Our grandparents and aunties would have us stay over and we had cousins stay at our house. Everyone pulled together to help each other and I have some lovely memories of my childhood.”

Mr Stewart, 83, drove diggers preparing the footings for buildings and landscaping for Crowsley Reynolds and Leadbitters construction firms. Mrs Stewart, 82, worked for the Co-op shoe shop in Chipping Norton before becoming an Avon lady in 1965, and will not retire until she completes 50 years’ service in the village next year. They also have nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
