A Bodicote couple will celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary with their family today (Thursday).
John and Joy Dale of Goose Lane were married at St Mary’s Church in Horse Fair, Banbury, on July 31, 1954 after meeting at Banbury Grammar School.
Mrs Dale, 83, said: “We didn’t really know each other until we both started sixth form. I studied English and French and John did science and maths.”
Mr Dale, 82, spent 18 months at RAF Lichfield as part of his national service, and regularly met up with his wife-to-be while she was teaching at Birmingham College.
After they married they spent their honeymoon in Southport before returning to Banbury and buying a flat opposite the Horton General Hospital.
They moved back to Bodicote after 18 months and later moved into their current home, where they have been living for more than 30 years.
Mrs Dale spent eight years teaching at the then-called Bodicote School on Church Street, while her husband spent the majority of his working life at Alcan, working as an analytical chemist before going into sales.
Mrs Dale said: “We both love gardening. I do the flowers and John grows the vegetables. We loved each other at the start and still love each other now.”
The couple have two children, Kim and Nick, and four grandchildren.
