The death of a grandmother who fell down the stairs at her daughter’s home was accidental, a coroner has ruled.
The inquest at Oxford Coroner’s Court on Monday into the death of Barbara Kowalczyk, 59, heard how she died from head injuries after a fall in Dover Avenue, Banbury, on March 28.
Mrs Kowalczyk and her husband Wojciech, of Boleslawiec in Poland, were visiting their daughter and son-in-law to help look after their two grandchildren.
Mrs Kowalczyk underwent surgery in 1989 to remove a brain tumour and as a result she had seen a deterioration in her gait, suffered excruciating headaches and would sometimes fall over.
On the day of the accident, Mr Kowalczyk had briefly left his wife at about 11.45am to buy salt and when he came back he found her at the bottom of the stairs.
Paramedics attended and she was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford via air ambulance, but died at about 10pm.
Assistant coroner Nicholas Graham said: “It is appropriate to conclude an accidental death following her fall down the stairs which perhaps was brought on by difficulties associated with her cancer treatment.”
