Keith Taylor, the Green MEP for Oxfordshire, has helped launch a new campaign group against fracking in the county.

Oxfordshire Against Fracking was launched at Banbury Canal Day earlier this month, following a well attended anti-fracking event in Oxford in July and in advance of anticipated applications for drilling licences in the county.

Fracking is the controversial method used to extract shale gas from deep underground and has been associated with both environmental and health problems.

Mr Taylor said: “We know that there is shale in the county and that several companies are considering applying for licences to drill.

“The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change very recently reported overwhelming proof that climate change is man made but the three main parties still seem hell bent on locking us into a future of continued fossil fuel consumption.”

Mr Taylor’s SE Euro Constituency also includes Balcombe in Sussex which is being seen as the front line in the campaign against fracking.

He met with concerned Balcombe residents last year when they became aware of the threat of drilling in their area and has held meetings with constituents across the South East to discuss their concerns about fracking.

He recently returned from a fact finding visit to fracking areas in America and earlier this year he visited fracking areas in Poland with fellow members of the European Parliament’s Petitions Committee.

Mr Taylor has set up a petition against fracking in Oxfordshire which now has nearly 500 signatures and can be viewed at

The MEP has also requested a meeting with County Council officers to discuss his concerns about the impacts of fracking and how they plan to deal with any applications they receive, but a date is yet to be set.
