A saleswoman who gave up her life in Banbury to help refugees in Greece has decided to stay and continue to volunteer.

Rachael Tew went to Greece in August to work in a refugee camp after being distressed by the crisis she saw unfolding on her television.

She originally went to Greece for two months, but has now decided her work is far from done and plans to stay.

She has given up her job as a saleswoman in an interior landscape company and has rented out her house.

She said: “After being here a month I realised I can’t go home to my comfortable life while all these refugees are stuck in limbo in Greece totally uncertain of their future.

“These people now have names and faces some of which I’m now lucky enough to call my friends.”

She has been working alongside a project called We Are Here, in a camp teaching English to children and adults and has set up a Go Fund Me page so she can continue her work in Greece.

Miss Tew said: “It’s getting cold now, most have now got containers but this is a slow process so there are lots still in tents. There are 11 toilets for 800 people. There is no hot water at all. Morale is low as many have no idea how much longer they will be here, they have no money, lots have lost family members during war.

“They are incredible people who love to feed you with the little they have and amazingly have this fighting joyful spirit.”

Among Miss Tew’s expenses are 200 euros a month for rent, including a volunteer car, and 200 euros a month for food.

She wants to raise £2,000, which will fund her for a further five months.
