Improvised extravanganza brought to life in Banbury

IF THERE is one showstopping night out that should not be missed in Banbury next month it is The Mill Theatre’s musical with a difference.

Showstopper! is an entirely improvised extravaganza where a new musical is created at every performance.

A writer has just one night to create a hit show to impress his producer. Stuck for ideas he takes audience suggestions for a title, storyline and musical style that they would like to see in the show.

The musicians and singers on stage then create a showstopping musical from scratch. And it is all happening at The Mill on Wednesday, December 12.

“The brilliance of this show is that it is utterly unpredictable, often side-splittingly funny and features some amazing dance routines and very catchy melodies,” said the venue’s programme manager Deborah Clarke.

Showstopper! comes to Banbury fresh from two West End seasons where The Showstoppers, as well as thrilling audiences and winning countless fans, have aired their first BBC Radio 4 series of six special 30-minute improvised musicals.

The troupe tours nationally, plays regular residencies in the capital and has enjoyed four sell-out Edinburgh Fringe seasons.

Their first West End seasons at The Ambassadors and The Criterion Theatre late last year won them huge critical acclaim from capacity audiences.

People return to see them time and again because every show is as different as it is brilliant.

The Guardian described the performers as the musical equivalent of the Comedy Store players, admired for their ability to think on their feet.

The cast has been described as ‘awesomely talented’ and the show ‘hilarious entertainment’. The spectacle features an incredible cast including Ruth Bratt, of Mongrels and Ricky Gervais’ Derek, Pippa Evans (Fast and Loose and Be Our Guest), David Reed (Penny Dreadfuls) and Oliver Senton (Mamma Mia).
