The sounds of hounds and horses could be heard at Upton House and Gardens on Boxing Day as members of the Warwickshire Hunt gathered for their traditional meeting.

About 1,000 people young and old were present to watch hunt members on horseback and their hounds gallop through the estate before they embarked on finding trails through the Warwickshire countryside.

Sam Butler, hunt chairman, hailed the day as a success. He said: “It was a great day, a very enjoyable meeting. There were 1,000 people who saw a traditional hunt with horses and hounds and the atmosphere was fantastic – it was a great day to be part of.”

The day was also used by hunt members to interact with people to try to encourage new members to join them on meetings throughout the year.

Mr Butler said: “There was a lot of support here from families who ride horses themselves and there are plenty of opportunities for them to join us. The support is not just from the surrounding villages, but families from Banbury too. It has undoubtedly increased since the hunting ban was agreed in 2004.

“The sight of so many people was a great occasion.”
