Donors needed to boost depleted blood stocks during cold and‘flu season

PEOPLE are being encouraged to save a life this autumn by giving blood and maintaining local stocks.

As the cold and ‘flu season gets under way, existing donors are sometimes unable to donate while they are unwell, putting a strain on local blood supplies.

Lead donor relations manager at NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) John Canning, said: “October can be a quieter time of year and with the dark nights drawing in it can be tempting to stay indoors – we are urging donors to come forward this month to help maintain blood stocks.

“If you are generally in good health you could potentially save up to three lives with every donation you give.

“Colds and ‘flu can have a knock-on effect with blood stocks, this is why we need people to act now to help save and improve patients’ lives across Oxfordshire.” Anyone aged 17 to 65, healthy and weighing more than seven stone 12 pounds can donate.
