When headline act Gipsy Kings look out from the Cornbury Music Festival stage on the last day of this year’s festival they will truly feel at home.

To welcome the Grammy-award winning flamenco rumba band to Oxfordshire, festival organisers plan to teach as many of the audience as possible how to dance flamenco rumba.

Masterminding this mass free teach-in is flamenco expert Rosa Maria, director of the award-winning dance school Camino del Flamenco based near Banbury.

With the help of her team of teachers, Rosa Maria will give rumba lessons throughout Sunday afternoon on July 6 in readiness for The Gipsy Kings’ exclusive UK appearance. She said: “We will be showing everyone a few simple rumba steps so they can really dance to the Gipsy Kings.

“Flamenco rumba is really simple to learn, whatever age you are; it’s the party dance of Spain, danced at every occasion.

“The Gipsy Kings have been part of Spanish life for many years. At any gathering, if someone puts on Bamboleo everyone gets to their feet and dances. Every time I hear their music it brings back a stream of memories for me and all Spaniards. Flamenco is much more than just a few catchy tunes, it is our life in music.”

Rosa Maria was born in the UK to Spanish parents and brought up in Little Spain, a Spanish community settled near London’s Portobello Road.

The Gipsy Kings won this year’s Best World Music Album Grammy for Savor Flamenco, after being nominated a record six times. They became popular internationally with their first album which included the timeless Bamboleo. The Cornbury Music Festival will take place at The Great Tew Estate from July 4-6. Full details at
