The last night of Shipston Proms music festival, when the town square is closed and takes on a festival atmosphere, has become famous in recent years.

This year’s feature acts for the two-week celebration which runs from June 19-July 5 are U2 tribute band U2UK and Banbury folk rockers Leatherat, both set to play on the final day of the festival.

But The Proms has lined up another headline act this year on Friday, June 27 at the Townsend Hall when Elvis tribute Lee Memphis King will hit Shipston.

Lee travels around the UK playing big theatres like the Hammersmith Apollo presenting ‘The King’ at his peak from the 1950s to the ‘Comeback Special’.

Accompanied by his orchestra and singers, Lee Memphis King leaves the audience in no doubt that they are witnessing the world’s number one Elvis tribute artist.

Shipston Proms chairman Tim Porter said: “I’m delighted to get this fantastic Elvis show to Shipston. Alan Parker, the bass player and a friend of mine, lives in Shipston and it’s a great chance for him to play in front of his home crowd.”

Doors open at 7.30pm. Tickets are available in advance at £18, (£20 on the door) from Clarke Electrical and Shipston Bakery or by calling Tim Porter on 01608 685332.

Shipston Proms started in 1998 when a group of like-minded people decided that their town needed more music. They set about putting together a small musical event where local talent could be showcased.

This has now manifested itself as Shipston Proms which sets out to put on a range of music for all tastes and ages, encouraging participation by as many local musicians as possible.

The Proms is organised by a small independent group of volunteers whose aim is to provide two weeks of unforgettable musical talent. The climax of the two-week festival is the spectacular Last Night of the Proms event in the High Street, which features a range of artists including the winners of the annual Shipston Fame talent contest.
