Decision due on Castle Quay plans

Plans to extend Banbury’s Castle Quay shopping centre and provide a cinema, hotel, food store and restaurants are among those being discussed by Cherwell District Council’s planning committee today, Thursday.

The plans, submitted by Scottish Widows Investment Partnership, would see the demolition of the General Foods Sports and Social Club and the northern Castle Quay car park to make way for the new development.

The GF club has registered strong opposition to the plans and many of the club’s supporters will be in attendance at Bodicote House for the 2pm meeting.

The committee will also consider a series of housing applications including plans for up to 40 homes north of Crouch Hill Farm on Broughton Road submitted by Banner Homes, 21 homes to the rear of 35-59 Oxford Road submitted by Spitfire Property Group and 59 homes east of Deane Close at Aynho Road, Adderbury.

All these applications are recommended for approval by council officers, largely because the government planning inspectorate insists the council has not met its five-year housing supply targets.

The council’s draft Local Plan, which seeks to impose greater local control over development in the district up to 2031, was submitted to Westminster for final consideration last week.

A number of Cherwell District Council’s projects linked to its Build! programme – which seeks to transform disused or derelict buildings into affordable housing – will also be discussed at the meeting.

These include the demolition of the former Orchard Lodge care home on Cope Road to build 16 apartments, the conversion of the former Oxfordshire County Council offices at Calthorpe House into 15 apartments and the construction of two bungalows on the site of a former garage at The Crescent in Steeple Aston.
