A staggering ten healthy puppies were born to a Banbury Border Collie dog in her first litter, it was reported in the Banbury Guardian on July 28, 1983.

The ten-puppy birth, said by experts to be exceptional for a first litter, surprised everyone.

The mother is three-year-old Lucy, who belongs to Mrs Sandra Hendry, of Portway, on Banbury’s Ruscote Estate.

Lucy had every reason to be dog-tired after the birth, but at once set to work caring for her extra-large litter.

“Ten is a very large number, believe me. All the pups are now doing very well. This week they were opening their eyes for the first time,” said Mrs Hendry, who is pictured right with Daniel Hendry and the ten puppies.

It was no dog’s life for Lucy, meanwhile, who was being looked after as she weaned her pups.
